Areopagus Lecture - Could Intelligent Design be Legitimate Science? - Del Ratzsch
7:00 PM – Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building - Del Ratzsch is Professor of Philosophy in the Department of Philosophy at Calvin College. His books include: Philosophy of Science: the Natural Sciences in Christian Perspective; The Battle of Beginnings: Why Neither Side Is Winning the Creation/Evolution Debate; Science and Its Limits; Nature, Design and Science. He has masters and doctorate from the University of Massachusetts.

Super Rice Research - Yuan Longping
3:30 PM – 1414 Molecular Biology Auditorium - Professor Yuan Longping is the Director-General of the China National Hybrid Rice Research and Development Center in Changsha, Hunan, China. His pioneering research has helped transform China from food deficiency to food security within three decades, and spurred the development of rice production in other Asian countries. Professor Yuan and Dr. Monty Jones of Sierra Leone are the 2004 World Food Prize Laureates.

From Iowa to Hollywood:The Business of Entertainment - Tim Menke
8:00 PM – Great Hall , Memorial Union - Tim Menke is Senior Publicist for Paramount Pictures, an entertainment unit of Viacom Inc. At Paramount he is responsible for strategic development and execution of the publicity marketing campaigns for motion pictures. He has publicized over 100 films and his achievements include receipt of the Maxwell Weinberg Showmanship Award for outstanding achievement in motion picture publicity for "Braveheart" and "Titanic." Upcoming projects include "The Spongebob Squarepants Movie" and "Lemony Snicket's A Series of Unfortunate Events." He graduated from Iowa State in 1986.

Languages on the American Map: National Security and Cultural Identity - Rosemary Feal
7:00 PM – Brunnier Gallery, Scheman Building, ISU Center - Rosemary Feal is Executive Director of the Modern Language Association, and has published widely in Latin American literature, including two books, Novel Lives: The Fictional Autobiographies of Guillermo Cabrera Infante and Mario Vargas Llosa and Painting on the Page: Interartistic Approaches to Modern Hispanic Texts, which she co-authored with Carlos Feal. Rosemary Feal is professor of Spanish and previously served as chair of the Department of Modern Languages and Literatures in the College of Arts and Sciences at the University at Buffalo.

Biotechnology Forum:  - Explore the Challenges of Using Biotechnology
2:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Scientists can now use biotechnology to create characteristics in plants and animals by transferring genetic material from one source to another plant or animal. What personal and societal issues emerge about these practices? After a brief videotape about biotechnology foods, participants will explore three alternative approaches for resolving the issue of how we treat the use of biotechnology in food production.

Women's Week 2004 - A Matter of Choice - Sarah Weddington
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Sarah Weddington argued the winning side of the landmark case Roe v. Wade before the United States Supreme Court. She is thought to be the youngest woman ever to win a case in the Supreme Court, and is a nationally known spokesperson on leadership and issues affecting women through her many roles as attorney, legislator, presidential advisor, and professor. She is the author of A Question of Choice, which details the Roe v. Wade case.

Indian Origins of Calculus and Its Transmission to Europe Prior to Newton and Leibniz - C. K. Raju
7:00 PM – 1104 Gilman - C. K. Raju heads the Center for Computer Science at the National University of Journalism in Bhopal. He played a lead role in the initial team at the Centre for Development of Advanced Computing, which built Param, India's first parallel supercomputer. He has been a Fellow of the Indian Institute of Advanced Study, National Institute of Science, Technology & Development Studies, and the Nehru Memorial Museum and Library. He is an Editorial Fellow of the Project of History of Indian Science, Philosophy and Culture, at the Centre for Studies in Civilizations, New Delhi, and holds a doctorate from the Indian Statistical Institute.

Sigma Xi - Sea Level Rise and Ancient Maya Civilization - Heather McKillop
7:00 PM – Campanile Roo, Memorial Union - Heather McKillop is in the Geography and Anthropology Department at Louisiana State University, with major areas of research interests in ancient Maya trade and economy, especially Maya sea trade. She has ongoing field and lab projects on the south coast and offshore cays of Belize, and is the author of Salt, White Gold of the Ancient Maya and the coeditor of Coastal Maya Trade. She received her doctorate in anthropology from University of California, Santa Barbara.

Dianne Bystrom, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, will provide opening comments and lead the discussion following the showing of the televised debate broadcast live from the campus of Case Western Reserve University. Student organizations will host tables providing election and campaign information and voter registration opportunity.
