Reducing Energy Demand through Conservation - Alan K. Meier
7:00 PM – Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium, Howe Hall - Alan K. Meier, a senior scientist with the Lawrence Berkeley National Laboratory and Energy Efficiency Center at the University of California, Davis, studies how people and equipment use energy and how to reduce energy consumption. He conducts research on topics related to energy efficiency, including low power modes, test procedures for appliances, and indicators of performance for commercial buildings. He has written more than one hundred articles and established several websites offering unique technical content related to standby power and real-time display of electricity supply and demand. Meier has degrees in chemistry and economics and earned his PhD in energy and resources from the University of California, Berkeley. The discussion will be moderated by Mark Kushner, collegiate professor of electrical engineering and computer science and director of the Michigan Institute for Plasma Science and Engineering. Part of the Engineering Thematic Year on Energy and Sustainability.
A Campus Conversation on Diversity - Panel Discussion
12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Barbara Woods will moderate a discussion about the experience of diverse students and faculty on campus. She was instrumental in organizing the Community Conversations on Diversity. Participants include Iowa State’s assistant director for equal opportunity Francesca Galarraga and diversity, graduate student Ashley Ratute, and undergraduate student Bri McGriff. Part of the Martin Luther King Jr. Day Celebration.

Diversity and Democracy in America - Manning Marable
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Manning Marable is the author of Living Black History: How Reimaging the African-American Past Can Remake America's Racial Future. He is a professor of public affairs, political science, and history at Columbia University, specializing in African American history. He was the founding director of the Center for Contemporary Black History and the Institute for Research in African-American Studies, which has become one of the nation's most prestigious centers of scholarship on the black American experience. Marable has written or edited two dozen books and scholarly anthologies, including The New Black Renaissance and The Great Wells of Democracy: The Meaning of Race in American Life. He is currently at work on a comprehensive biography of Malcom X. The 2009 Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Celebration Keynote Speaker.
Celebrate! Carrie Chapman Catt’s 150th Birthday Party & Performance
3:30 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Join the birthday party and enjoy cake, punch, coffee and a performance. Jane Cox, professor and stage director for Iowa State University Theatre, will perform a 30-minute excerpt from her one-woman play highlighting the life of suffrage leader Carrie Chapman Catt. A graduate of Iowa State, Catt is best known for leading the "winning plan" that achieved suffrage for women with the passage of the 19th Amendment to the U.S. Constitution. Part of the College of Liberal Arts and Sciences 50th Anniversary Celebration.

4:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Musical performances and speakers celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Musical performances and speakers celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Speakers include Religious Studies Professor Mary Sawyer, Government of the Student Body President Daniel Fischer, African American Studies Program Director Tunde Adeleke, and Black Student Alliance President Courtney Thomas. Provost Elizabeth Hoffman will present the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Advancing One Community Awards. Birthday cake graciously donated by Campus Dining Services.

Watch the Broadcast! Inauguration Swearing-In Ceremony
10:00 AM – Maintenance Shop, Memorial Union - Enjoy coffee and snacks while watching the big screen as President-elect Barack Obama and the Vice President-elect Joseph Biden have the oath of office administered by Chief Justice John Roberts and Associate Justice John Paul Stevens. The program, broadcast from the steps of the United States Capitol, will include musical selections by John Williams, Aretha Franklin, Itzhak Perlman and Yo-Yo Ma. Other participants include Senator Dianne Feinstein, poet Elizabeth Alexander, and the Reverends and Drs. Rick Warren and Joseph E. Lowery.

Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism - Ron Suskind
8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Ron Suskind is a Pulitzer Prize-winning author and journalist whose work examines truth and accountability in the post-9/11 Bush administration. His latest book, The Way of the World: A Story of Truth and Hope in an Age of Extremism, explores the consequences of America’s failing moral leadership in an age of terrorism and nuclear weapons. He is also the author of The One Percent Doctrine, The Price of Loyalty and A Hope in the Unseen: An American Odyssey from the Inner City to the Ivy League. From 1993 to 2000, Suskind was the senior national affairs writer for the Wall Street Journal. He is a graduate of the University of Virginia and the Columbia University Graduate School of Journalism.
The Future of Oil and Gas - Sig Cornelius
7:00 PM – Alliant Energy-Lee Liu Auditorium, Howe Hall - Sig Cornelius is Senior Vice President for Planning, Strategy and Corporate Affairs at ConocoPhillips. A native of Iowa and an Iowa State alum (BA 1976), he joined Conoco in 1980 in the natural gas and gas processing organization. Since then he has held numerous positions in the midstream, upstream, and finance organizations, including president of Conoco Canada Ltd., president of Dubai Petroleum Company, and president of Global Gas. The discussion will be moderated by David Yepsen, chief political correspondent for The Des Moines Register. Part of the Engineering Thematic Year on Energy and Sustainability.
HIV and AIDS: Local and Global Perspectives - Mohammad Jaber Kabbesh
7:00 PM – Cardinal Room, Memorial Union - Dr. Mohammad Jaber Kabbesh, a local infectious diseases doctor, and Amy Noynaert, a representative from the American Red Cross Central Iowa Chapter, will discuss the local and global issues surrounding HIV and AIDS. Dr. Kabbesh will share medical information about HIV and AIDS and the medicines used to treat patients. Ms. Noynaert will speak about the international HIV crisis. Part of World AIDS Week.
