Nonsense on Stilts about Science: Field Adventures of A Scientist-Philosopher - Massimo Pigliucci
5:10 PM – 101 Carver Hall - An intrepid debater, blogger and podcaster as well as a professor of philosophy at the City University of New York, Massimo Pigliucci focuses on science, pseudoscience and how ordinary citizens can tell the difference. In this talk, he explores what scientists, philosophers and citizens themselves need to do promote a better understanding of science. Pigliucci earned a PhD degree in biology from the University of Connecticut and a PhD in philosophy from the University of Tennessee.

Jens Jensen and his Contemporaries in Design - Robert Grese
7:00 PM – Garden Room, Reiman Gardens - Robert Grese will discuss the turn of the 20th century and the impact of landscape and architectural innovators like Frank Lloyd Wright and Frederick Law Olmsted. Grese is a professor in the University of Michigan's School of Natural Resources and Environment and also serves as director of the Matthaei Botanical Gardens and Nichols Arboretum. He is the author of Jens Jensen: Maker of Natural Parks and Gardens and has written widely on the prairie style of landscape gardening. This program is presented in partnership with The Danish Immigrant Museum in Elk Horn, Iowa. This year The Danish Immigrant Museum will be exploring the life, career, and ongoing legacy of landscape architect Jens Jensen (1860-1951).

The Science of Team Science - Holly Falk-Krzesinski
4:45 PM – South Ballroom, Memorial Union - Holly Falk-Krzesinski will discuss empirical research findings about team science and help translate those findings into effective practices for the scientific collaborators and funders of team science. She is a research assistant professor and the director of Research Team Support & Development at the Northwestern University Clinical and Translational Science (NUCATS) Institute. Holly Falk-Krzesinski has assisted with numerous multi-disciplinary, team-oriented research initiatives, from structural genomics of infectious diseases to art history to cancer nanotechnology to bioenergy. She has helped secure more than $140M in collaborative federal grants and contracts.

5:30 PM – Kocimski Auditorium, Design College - Chris Guillard is a founding partner of CMG and is an accomplished designer who is creating public landscapes of all types and scales. His work and research is focused on the value of public open space and urban landscapes that integrate multiple functions into communities. Mr. Guillard currently serves on the board of the Neighborhood Parks Council, a San Francisco-based nonprofit organization that advocates for superior, equitable, and sustainable park and recreation system. Women and Leadership: Career Success and Satisfaction - Gretchen Bataille
7:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Gretchen M. Bataille is Senior Vice President for Programs and Services at the American Council on Education in Washington, DC. She recently finished a one-year term as interim vice president for academic affairs at the Fashion Institute of New York-SUNY, after serving for four years as president of the University of North Texas. She previously served as the chief academic officer of the sixteen-campus University of North Carolina system. Bataille is a recognized scholar of Native American literature and has focused on issues of diversity, civil rights and ethnic studies. Part of the Women's Leadership Series.

American Indian FilmTalk - Panel Discussion with Jon Proudstar
7:00 PM – Gallery, Memorial Union - American Indian actor, writer and director Jon Proudstar joins Meskwaki filmmakers Mary Goose, Rean Goose and Lucas Goose for a panel discussion about the American Indian film world and how each of their lives intersect with it. Expect insight, advice, experience and even a few laughs as we explore this diverse and exciting topic! Jon Proudstar first appeared in Madhouse with John Larroquette and Kirstie Alley in 1990. He attended the Sundance Writer's and Director's Lab and has worked with writer David Leighton. His first independent film, Dude Vision, was released in 2005 and won Best Comedy at the 2005 Arizona International Film Festival and Best Short Subject at the 2005 Native Voice Film Festival.

Comedy with The Daily Show's Kristen Schaal
9:00 PM – Stephens Auditorium, Iowa State Center - Actress and comedian Kristen Schaal joined The Daily Show in 2008 as a writer and special commentator. She is perhaps best known for her role as Mel in the HBO series Flight of the Conchords and Louise in Bob's Burgers. She was also a writer and consultant for South Park season eleven. Her recent live comedy performances include John Oliver's New York Stand Up Show, the Bonnaroo Festival, and the Edinburgh Fringe Festival. A graduate of Northwestern University, Schaal's comedy career got a jump start in 2005 when she was included in New York Magazine's "The Ten Funniest New Yorkers You've Never Heard Of." She and Daily Show writer Rich Blomquist are coauthors of The Sexy Book of Sexy Sex. Schaal's comedy partner Kurt Braunohler will open. VEISHEA 2012

Engineering in the Navy: Contingencies to Construction - Rear Admiral Katherine L. Gregory
4:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Rear Admiral Katherine Gregory will discuss the U.S. Navy's construction, engineering and humanitarian efforts in Japan after the earthquake and tsunami of March 2011. Rear Admiral Gregory is the commander of the Naval Facilities Engineering Command Pacific and Pacific Fleet Civil Engineer. She is the first female flag officer in the United States Navy Civil Engineer Corps. Her thirty-year military career has included service with the Naval Construction Force (Seabees), including deployments to Iraq and Haiti; the construction of a new support base and hospital in Naples, Italy; shore facility environmental compliance in San Francisco; and service as a Naval Air Station public works officer in Adak, Alaska. Picky Eaters and (In) Active Kids: Establishing Healthy Habits in Early Childhood - Laura Bellows
7:00 PM – Reiman Gardens, Garden Room Lecture Hall - Laura Bellows is recognized for her work on the prevention of childhood obesity, for which she was recently honored with a Presidential Early Career Award for Scientists and Engineers. Her work emphasizes nutrition and physical activity as well as educating parents and teachers, the primary role models for young children. Bellows has been involved with several programs for preschool-age children, including the nutrition-focused Food Friends and the physical fitness program Mighty Moves. She is a registered dietician and an assistant professor and extension specialist in the Department of Food Science and Human Nutrition at Colorado State University. The Barbara E. Emerging Terrain: Burgeoning Public Interest Design - Anne Trumble
5:30 PM – Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design - Anne Trumble is the founder of Emerging Terrain, a nonprofit organization in Omaha that exists to creatively engage the public about factors shaping the built environment. She was responsible for the design and management of West 125th Streetscape in Harlem with the NYC Economic Development Corporation in addition to other streetscapes, greenroofs, parks, and plazas. Trumble began her interest in landscape while growing up on a farm outside of Omaha. She earned an undergraduate degree in horticulture and landscape design from the University of Nebraska-Lincoln and a Master's of Landscape Architecture from the University of British Columbia. She has studied architecture in Tokyo, Japan, and urban development in Havana, Cuba, and then designed Olympic venues in and around Vancouver.
