The Role of the Military in Latin America - Dr. Lyle McAlister
8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - After completing his MA and PhD in history at the University of California at Berkeley, McAlister began his teaching career at the University of Florida. In addition to teaching Latin American history, Professor McAlister served in a variety of administrative positions at the University of Florida, including Head of the Department of History and Director of the Center for Latin American Studies. For over a decade the questions of the role of the military in Latin American politics has been one of his major research interests. The results of this research are in published works. Politics and Economic Development in Latin America - Dr. Charles Anderson
4:10 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Charles W. Anderson, a professor of political science at the University of Wisconsin , received his A.B. from Grinnell College (1955), M.A. from John Hopkins (1957) and Ph.D. from the University of Wisconsin (1960). Currently chairman of the Ibero-American Area Studies Program at Wisconsin, Professor Anderson has received the Award for Outstanding Teaching by a Teaching Assistant (1960) and the Emil H. Stieger Award for Teaching Excellence (1963). He has also served on the Board of Directors of the national Consortium for latin American Studies and as External Research Consultant for the Department of State. Professor Anderson is recognized as a major scholar in comparative Latin American politics. His particular emphasis on the relationship between political systems and economic development is reflected in his publications which include The Political Economy of Mexico (with William P. Glade,Jr., 1963), Politics and Economic Change in Latin America (1967), and The Political Economy of Modern Spain (1970). Part of the World Affairs Series: Latin America - Que Direccion?

Contemporary Latin America - Dr. James Goodsell
8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - James Nelson Goodsell received his B.A. from the Principia College (1951), M.A. from Mexico City College (1952) and Ph.D. from Harvard University (1966}. As Latin American Editor of The Christian Science Monitor, Dr. Goodsell has earned the esteem of his North American and Latin American colleagues. He was honored with the Sigma Delta Chi award for foreign correspondence in 1966 for his coverage of the revolution in the Dominican Republic and in 1968 he received the Tom Wallace award from the Inter-American Press association in recognition of his work for inter-American friendship and understanding. Dr. Goodsell writes for a variety of other periodicals, including the {i]Saturday Review, the Progressive, and Current History. He is the editor of The Quest for Change in Latin America: Materials for a Twentieth-Century Assessment (1970). Part of the World Affairs Series: Latin America - Que Direccion?
