Performance: Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band
8:00 PM – Curtiss Auditorium - The Trinidad Tripoli Steel Band will perform Calypso music on finely tuned steel oil drums. The 23 drum ensemble ranges from a "bass" drum with 21 notes to a smaller "first violin" with 36 notes. The Steel Band has performed their extensive repertoire at eight world fairs. They have presented two command performances for the queen of England and their "Gold" album won an Emmy Award in 1972. Part of the World Affairs Series: North-South Dialogue

8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Dr. Mazrui is Director of the Center for Afro-American and African Studies at the University of Michigan. originally from Kenya, he is internationally renowned of this research on African politics, comparative and international political culture, political deviancy and dependency. he has held offices with the African Studies Association and is currently vice-president of both the International Congress of African Studies and the Royal african Society, London. 3:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Ramakrishna Vaitheswaran, a former visiting Professor at Iowa State, is a member of the East-West Seminar, a Tokyo-based organization that brings together public leaders from East and West for dialogue, aimed at greater understanding. Dr. Vaitheswaran is Chair of the Department of Business and Economics at Coe College, Cedar Rapids, Iowa. his research interest is in the political economy of developing countries, a topic on which he has written and lectured in this country. 8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Cecile Guidote-Alvarez, a Philippino self-exiled artist, is one of the most prominent theatre director-producers of the Philippines. Ms. Guidote-Alvarez established the Third World Institute of Theatre Art Studies and the Folk Arts for Communication and Education in New York. She is the recipient of the prestigious Ramon Magsaysay Distinguished Asian Award for the Arts. Part of the World Affairs Series: North-South Dialogue

Pelete Bite: Income Generating Textile Art of African Women - Joanne Eicher
3:00 PM – Brunnier Gallery, Scheman Building - Joanne Bubolz Eicher is professor and Head of the Department of Textiles and Clothing at the University of Minnesota. Dr. Eicher's background includes research on pelete bite textiles during three field trips to Kalabari, nigeria. Dr. Eicher brings her academic training as a sociologist and her extensive experience in socio-cultural study of American and African dress to the analysis of the Kalabari textiles.
