Writing from the Frontier: A Call and Response - Virginia Hamilton
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Virginia Hamilton has received every major award and honor which can be accorded an American author of children's books. Her works include Zeely; M.C. Higgins, the Great; and The House of Dies Drear, which was dramatized on public television as a part of Wonderworks.
Arnold Adoff is a poet and anthologist. His books of poetry for children include All the colors of the Race, Eats, and Today We Are Brother and Sister. He taught for 12 years in Harlem and other New York City public schools.

TV: Programming for Children - Duane Ellett
3:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Duane and Floppy have been two of Iowa television's most recognized personalities for nearly 30 years. Mr. Ellett will briefly discuss changes in children's programming which led to the cancellation of one of his shows. Following the showing of a cartoon, he will return with his puppet friend and visit with the audience.

KidsPlace: How to Make Your City a Good Place for Children - Robert Aldrich
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Dr. Aldrich is a pediatrician and urban planner who has traveled the world over seeking to relate children's health to the design and growth of cities. Seattle became the first city to adopt his idea of creating "KidsPlace", a program of innovation in city design and policy aimed at making cities safe and healthy places to raise families. Aldrich was the first director of the National Institute of Child Health and Human Development.

Avoiding Trouble in River City - Marie Wilson, Martha Willits, Laurissa Sellers, Jack Shelley (Moderator)
3:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Marie Wilson was a Des Moines city council member and director of Human Resources at Iowa Bankers Association before she was named executive director of the Ms. Foundation. This foundation includes the Free-To-Be-You-And-Me Foundation which funds projects for children and families. Martha Willits is the first woman elected to the Polk County Board of Supervisors where she must make decisions concerning social services funding. Laurissa Sellers was the director of the Young Women's Resource Center and sit on the Child Abuse and Neglect council of Greater Des Moines.
