What Do We Want to Accomplish? Rethinking the Goals of Social Poverty - Charles Murray
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Charles Murray is Bradley Fellow with the Manhattan Institute for Policy Research. His book, Losing Ground: Social Policy, 1950-1980, has been used (by the Reagan Administration) as the basis for reform of the welfare system. His other recent works have appeared in The Atlantic, The Wall Street Journal, Political Science Quarterly, and The New York Times. He has been credited as the single most important influence in the emerging bipartisan consensus on welfare reform. Part of the National Affairs Series.

12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Judith Weitz is the Director of State and Local Affairs at the Children's Defense Fund where she develops and implements strategies for mobilizing advocates for children and families. She co-authored several reports including Suffer the Children: The Politics of Mental Health in Massachusetts, The Deficit Reduction Act of 1984, and medicaid changes for Children and Pregnant Women. Poverty in America - Mitch Snyder
8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Mitch Snyder is an activist with the Community for Creative Non-Violence and runs the Second Street shelter for the homeless in Washington, D.C. His dramatic actions to raise funds and call national attention to the plight of the homeless were dramatized in a CBS television movie starring Martin Sheen. He continues to fast and organize sit-ins and other actions to keep the country focused on those needs. Part of the National Affairs Series.

Below the Line: Living Poor in America - Eugene Richards
3:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Eugene Richards was named Journalist of the Year in 1987 by the International Center of Photography for his book on the working poor, Below the Line: Living Poor in America . His other books include Exploding into Live, 50 Hours , and the upcoming Knife and Gun Club: Scenes from an Emergency Room . His photographs have appeared in GEO, Life, new York Times Magazine . Part of the National Affairs Series.
