The Role of Literature in the Creation of a New Africa - Lewis Nkosi
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Lewis Nkosi was exiled from South Africa, where he was a journalist after being awarded a Nieman Fellowship to Harvard. He has taught literature at the University of Zambia, university of California (Irvine) and the University of Warsaw. he was literary editor of The New African magazine and editor of S. African Information Bulletin. He has written many articles, plays and stories including the novel Mating Birds and now teaches at the University of Wyoming. The Role of Multi-Nationals & Labor in the New South Africa - Nmonde Ngubo
12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Nmonde ngubo is a special representative from South Africa to the United Mine Workers of America and spokesperson for the South African Mineworkers Union which has been a key anti-apartheid voice in the US. She was research fellow at the Institute for policy studies and conducted research on the oral history of woman's participation in the liberation movement in South Africa. Multilateral Deveolpment, Banks and the Fate of Africa's Rainforest - Korrina Horta
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Korrina Horta is an economist with the Environmental Defense Fund where she carries out research on the environmental and social impact of projects funded by multilateral development bank. She played a leading role in international efforts to reform the Global environment Facility, a World Bank managed Fund, that was set up by governments to address non-governmental organizations in several African countries in an effort to ensure that internationally funded projects do not contribute to environmental destruction and harm local people. 12:00 PM – Gallery, Memorial Union - Hilda Rwabazaire Paqui is the United Nations Development Program public affairs officer where she is manager of the "Human Development Report" projection and liaison with non-governmental organizations as the Uganda Government delegate to the United Nations she helped draft the Convention on All Forms of Discrimination Against Women which came into force in 1981. Africa: Old Myths and New Realities - Randall Robinson
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Randall Robinson is the founder and executive director of TransAfrica, the national lobbying organization for Africa and the Caribbean. TransAfrica mobilized opposition to apartheid to pass the Anti-Apartheid Act over President Reagan's veto. He is also executive director of the TransAfrica Forum which was founded to collect, analyze and desseminate information about Africa and the Carribean and U.S. foreign policy affecting these regions. 12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Lennox Hinds is legal counsel to the African National Congress and the Republic of Namibia and serves as the permanent representative to the United Nations for the International Association of Democratic Lawyers. He is senior partner with Stevens, hinds and White and professor of law and chairman of the Administration of Justice Department at Rutgers University. He specializes in criminal and international humanitarian law and is the author of Illusions of Justice: Human rights violations in the United States.
