Population: A Systems Approach - Daniel Quinn
12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Daniel Quinn is the author of Ishmael, the 1991 winner of the Turner Tomorrow Fellowship which was established to encourage authors to seek "creative and positive solutions to global problems." Prior to Ishmael, Quinn had a thirty-three year career as a writer, editor, and publisher. His other books include Providence: The Story of a Fifty-Year Vision Quest,A Newcomer's Guide to the Afterlife (with Tom Whalen), and The Story of B.

8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Julian Simon has studied population and immigration economics for a quarter of a century. he teaches Business Administration at the University of Maryland and is the author of almost two hundred professional studies and dozens of articles. His books include: the State of Humanity, ultimate Resource II, Population Matters, The Economics of Population Growth, Population and Development in Poor Countries, and The Resourceful Earth.

Population, Comsumption, Sustainable Development? - Denis Goulet
12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Denis Goulet is the O'Neill Professor in Education for Justice, University of Notre Dame. he holds concurrent appointments in the department of Economics, the Helen Kellogg Institute for International Studies and the Joan B. Kroc Institute for International Peace Studies. A pioneer in the study of development ethics he has published over 150 articles and monographs and ten books including: Ethics of Development, The Cruel Choice, A New Moral Order, and Incentives for development: The Key to Equity.

Equity, Sustainability and the Earth's Carrying Capacity - Gretchen Daily
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Gretchen C. Daily is the co-author of The Stork and the Plow: The Equity Answer to the Human Dilemma with Paul Ehrlich. She is the Bing Interdisciplinary Research Scientist in the Department of Biological Sciences at Stanford University. Her article on land degradation recently appeared in Science and she is currently editing a book on the value of ecosystem services. Part of the World Affairs Series

12:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - Diane Dillon Ridgely is board president of Zero Population Growth, the nation's largest grassroots organization concerned with the impacts of rapid growth. She was appointed by President Clinton to his Council on Sustainable Development where she serves as co-chair of the Population and Consumption Task force. She served as delegate and consultant at the United Nations conferences in Rio, Beijing and Istanbul.

Where's the Pill for Men and Other Complaints - Carl Djerassi
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Carl Djerassi, best known as the "father of the birth control pill," is a professor of chemistry at Stanford. In addition to his ground-breaking work on the first steroid to be used effectively for birth control, he also developed antihistamines, was the first to synthesize cortizone, and founded one of the first environmentally aware pesticide companies. He has published over 1,200 articles and seven books in his areas of research. He won the Wolf Prize in Chemistry, the National Medal of Science, the Priestly Medal, and the National Medal of Technology. He is a member of the National Academy of Sciences and its Institute of Medicine and the American Academy of Arts and Sciences. Part of the World Affairs Series.
