Sigma Xi - Research Universities: Past, Present and Futue - Gregory L. Geoffroy
8:00 PM – Gallery, Memorial Union - Gregory L. Geoffroy is Iowa State University's 14th president. He was Provost and Senior Vice President for Academic Affairs at the University of Maryland, College Park, and briefly served as interim president of the university. He served as professor, chair of the Department of Chemistry, and dean of Eberly College of Science at the Pennsylvania State University. He is a nationally acclaimed researcher in organometallic chemistry. He has published more than 200 research articles in refereed journals; presented more than 200 invited lectures in the United States and nine other nations; and is co-author of the book Organometallic Photochemistry. He earned an undergraduate degree from the University of Louisville, and a doctorate from the California Institute of Technology.

Institute on World Affairs - What Is Terrorism? - The Role of Intelligence in Counterterrorism
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Jim Olson is a Senior Lecturer and the CIA Officer in Residence at the Bush School of Government and Public Service in College Station, Texas. He joined the Central Intelligence Agency in 1969 and served for 31 years, mostly overseas in clandestine operations. He held the positions as Deputy Chief of Station in Moscow and Chief of Station in Vienna and Mexico City. He also served as Chief of Counterintelligence at CIA Headquarters in Langley, Virginia. Professor Olson received his law degree from the University of Iowa in 1969.

Institute on World Affairs - What Is Terrorism? - The Military Role in the War on Terrorism
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Piers M. Wood was Chief of Staff at the Center for Defense Information, an organization which conducts research on trends and developments in U.S. and international defense policies and strategies, and provides forums where legitimate viewpoints on defense matters can be discussed. In May of 2000, he started a new national military research organization, Military Insights. Previously, he served 28 years in military service, earning the Silver Star and two Bronze Stars with the combat V, retiring as a Lt. Colonel. His assignments included serving as an Assistant Professor of history at West Point and as an Aide-de-Camp to a four-star Army Group Commander in NATO.

Performance: An Evening of Spoken Word - Henry Rollins
8:00 PM – Stephens Auditorium, ISU Center - ADMISSION FREE - Henry Rollins has emerged as a post-punk renaissance man. In addition to making albums with the Rollins Band, he is writing books and poetry, performing spoken-word tours, writing a magazine column in Details, acting in several movies, and appearing on MTV as an occasional VJ. All the while, he has kept his artistic integrity, becoming a kind of father figure for many alternative bands of the '90s on the strength of albums like 1992's The End of Silence, 1994's Weight and1997's Come In and Burn. He won a Grammy Award for his spoken word performance which has been described as part storytelling, part social commentary, part spontaneous cranial combustion. Free Admission

How to Build a Creative Team, Develop Great Morale and Improve Bottom-Line Performance - James Autry
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - James Autry will discuss his new book Servant Leader: A Practical Guide to Implementing the Principals. He is the author of five books and a leading authority on leadership thinking. His book, Love and Profit: The Art of Caring Leadership,won the Johnson, Smith & Knisely Award, and was featured on Bill Moyers' special series, "The Power of the Word," on PBS. Before taking early retirement in 1991 to pursue his present career, Autry was senior vice president and president of Meredith Corporation's Magazine Group, the publisher of "Better Homes and Gardens", a $500 billion operation with over 900 employees. His other books include:Life and Work: A Manager's Search for Meaning;Confessions of an Accidental Businessman: It Takes a Lifetime to Find Wisdom; andNights Under a Tin Roof : Recollections of a Southern Boyhood.

A FORUM ON TASERS
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Members of the university community are asked to bring their questions and concerns to an open- mike discussion about whether stun devices should be included as part of the equipment carried regularly by all certified and trained Iowa State University officers. Gene Deisinger of the Iowa Department of Public Safety will explain the operation of the Advanced Taser stun device. Responders will include GSB President Andy Tofilon, IRHA President Paul Duncan, GSS Vice President Dee Egdorf, and others. Performance: A Sense of Wonder - A Play based on the life and works of Rachel Carson
8:00 PM – Maintenance Shop, Memorial Union - Rachel Carson has been called "the patron saint of the environmental movement." She was a marine biologist and zoologist best known for her book Silent Spring, which alerted the world to the dangers of chemical pesticides. She was also one of America's great poets of the natural world. Through the power of her knowledge and the beauty of her language, Rachel Carson became one of the great champions of the living world. Kaiulani Lee brings more than 20 years of experience to the theatre. She has been nominated for a Drama Desk Award and won an OBIE Award. She has guest-starred on Law & Order, The Equalizer, Tales from the Dark Side and The Waltons. Her film credits include The Fan, Garp, Cujo, and Compromising Positions. Following the performance, Leopold Center Director Fred Kirschenmann and Ms. Lee will lead an audience discussion.

8:00 PM – Maintenance Shop, Memorial Union - Maimul Khan is visiting professor at the University of Illinois College of Law and has written extensively on Islam, human rights, and the politics of the Afghan region. He was chair of the department of law at the University of Dhaka. He has a doctorate in law from Tashkent State University in Bangladesh, and was a Fulbright scholar at the University of Illinois College of Law where he now teaches. Institute on World Affairs - What Is Terrorism? - History That Embraces Humanity
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Howard Zinn is best know for his book A People's History of the United States which is being made into a series on HBO. He is also the historian quoted by Matt Damon in the Academy -Award- winning film Good Will Hunting. Howard Zinn is Professor Emeritus of political science at Boston University, and was chairman of the History Department at Spelman College. His other books include Declarations of Independence: Cross- Examining American Ideology; You Can't Be Neutral on a Moving Train: A Personal History of Our Times, and The Politics of History.

Institute on World Affairs Series - What Is Terrorism? - The Drug War and Military Aid to Colombia
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Luis Gilberto Murillo is the youngest Colombian to win a gubernatorial election. He organized his winning campaign around the environment and issues related to the ancestral lands of the Afro-Colombian and indigenous populations of Colombia. His advocacy for his people led to his kidnapping, repeated death threats and eventual exile to the U.S. He is opposed to U.S. military aid to his country.
