The Life of Frida Kahlo: A One-Woman Show - Lara Gallardo
7:00 PM – Brunnier Gallery, Scheman Building - Lara Gallardo presents a portrait of Mexican artist Frida Kahlo whose works depict her personal saga: the disabilities she suffered as a result of an accident; her turbulent marriage to Mexican muralist Diego Rivera; her involvement with the Mexican Revolution; and, ultimately, her indomitable will to create. She is equally well known for the cult of personality surrounding her memory as for her artistic accomplishment. Lara Gallaro performs in film and theater in Mexico. Frida Kahlo was writen for Lara by Mexican writer and director, Pepe Loza.

Women's Week 2002 - The Wild, Wild Web: Cyberstalking - Jane Hitchcock
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Jayne Hitchcock is an online crime and security expert and the author of Net Crimes and Misdemeanors: Outmaneuvering Online. Statistics from the National Insittute of Justice/ Bureau of Justice indicate that 13 percent of college women have been victimized by Some form of stalking. Jayne Hitchcock will describe the threat of cyberstalking, trace its origins, and suggest how to prosecute perpetrators.

One Child, Two Languages: Second Language Acquisition in the Early Childhood Classroom - Dr. Patton O. Tabors
7:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Dr. Patton O. Tabors, Head Start expert, will discuss the impact of the sharp increase in early childhood classrooms with large numbers of children enrolled from other than English-speaking homes. Dr. Tabors will also discuss the need for early childhood educators to develop a new understanding about the process of second language acquisition, how second language acquisition can be facilitated and assessed in classrooms, and how to provide support for parents of English-language learners.

Imagining the Land: Visiting Writers Series - The Long Life of a Short Story Collection - Gina Ochsner
7:00 PM – Oak Room, Memorial Union - Gina Ochsner is the recipient of the William Faulkner Award, Raymond Carver Award, and most recently, the Flannery O'Connor Award for short fiction, for her collection of short stories, the necessary grace to fall. She is now at work on a fictionalized encyclopedia dictionary of Romanian myths and culture, another collection of short stories, and a novel.

Women's Week 2002 - Leveling the Playing Field: 30 Years of Title IX - Christine Grant
8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Christine Grant is a crusader for gender equity in intercollegiate athletics and has along association with Title IX. She was the Women's Athletic Director at the University of Iowa for 27 years, a position which she held since the department was established in 1973. She was a founding member of the Association for Intercollegiate Athletics for Women, serving as President of that association from 1979-82, and was on the Board of Directors of the National Association of Collegiate Women's Athletic Administrators, serving as President of that association from 1987-98 and chairing the Gender Equity Committee. Ann Rhodes was the vice president for University Relations at the University of Iowa from 1991-2000, where she was in charge of the university's athletic programs. She is currently in the Office of the General Counsel, and has adjunct faculty appointments in the College of Law where she teaches the law of intercollegiate athletics. Dianne Bystrom, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics, will moderate.

7:00 PM – Design College Auditorium - Dr. Omar Khalidi is a staff member of the Agha Khan Program for Islamic Architecture at the Massachusetts Institute of Technology. He is the author of Approaches to Mosque Design in North America. He received is masters from Harvard University, and a doctorate from the University of Wales, UK.

7:00 PM – Maintenance Shop, Memorial Union - Jim McCormick, chair of the Political Science Department, will moderate a discussion with Political Science Professors Joel Moses and Steffen Schmidt, and Hsain Ilahiane of the Anthropology Department.

From Right to Reality: - The Fight for Access to AIDS Treatment in Developing Countries - Amanda Lugg
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Amanda Lugg is a representative of Health GAP, an AIDS treatment access advocacy organisation that fights to remove all barriers to global treatment access. She will be discussing strategies to overcome this access crisis.

VOICES FROM THE PRAIRIE: - The Third Annual Iowa Writers' Celebration - Jane Smiley
2:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Jane Smiley is the author of nine previous works of fiction, including The Age of Grief, The Greenlanders, Ordinary Love and Good Will, A Thousand Acres, for which she was awarded the Pulitzer Prize, and Moo. She previously taught at Iowa State University as a distinguished professor of English. John Cole, Director of the national Center for the Book in the Library of Congress will join Jane Smiley in a discussion of Iowa writers. Susan Carlson, Associate Provost and Professor of English, will moderate the discussion. This event is to celebrate the establishment of the Iowa Center for the Book.
