Insect Horror Film Festival
6:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - This celebration of insect life includes activities for all ages: hissing cockroaches, giant millipedes, a butterfly tent, a honey bee display, insect displays, an insect tasting event with corn borer cornbread and cricket brittle, and a screening of "A Bug's Life." Doors open at 6 p.m. and film starts at 7:30 p.m.

Institute on World Affairs Series - Religion and Conflict - Defining Fundamentalism - Bruce B. Lawrence
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Bruce B. Lawrence is the author of Shattering the Myth: Islam beyond Violence; Go, God, Go: Resilient Religion in the Global Century, and the award-winning monograph, Defenders of God: The Fundamentalist Revolt Against the Modern Age . He is the Nancy and Jeffrey Marcus Humanities Professor of Religion, and Chair of the Department of Religion at Duke University. His other books included Shahrastani on the Indian Religions. Notes from a Distant Flute, The Rose and the Rock, Ibn Khaldun and Islamic Ideology, and the in-progress monograph is on Asian religions in America, tentatively titled New Faiths/Old Fears.

The Divine Nine: A History of African American Fraternities and Sororities - Lawrence C. Ross, Jr.
7:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Lawrence C. Ross, Jr. is the author of The Divine Nine, the first book to chronicle the histories of the nine African-American fraternities and sororities that make up the National Pan-Hellenic Council. In it he profiles of prominent members such as the late civil rights leader Martin Luther King Jr., television personality Star Jones, Operation PUSH chair Rev. Jesse Jackson and the late tennis legend Arthur Ashe. In his presentation he will discuss such current issues as pledging, hazing and interfraternal relations. Lawrence Ross attended the University of California at Berkeley, and has been a brother of Alpha Phi Alpha Fraternity, Inc. for over fifteen years. As a journalist, his work has been seen in over 200 African American newspapers, and he currently works as a reporter for the Los Angeles Independent Newspapers.

8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - James Gilmore is co-founder of Strategic Horizons LLP, a consulting firm and think tank helping businesses conceive and design new ways of adding value to their economic offerings. Pine and Gilmore challenge traditional business assumptions, point out new market turbulence phenomena, and introduce a new set of questions that drive companies to think differently about themselves and the world in which they compete. James Gilmore began his career with Proctor and Gamble, was a consultant for ten years with Cleveland Consulting Associations, and is a certified instructor of Dr. Edward De Bono's lateral thinking methodologies andPre a member of both the Creative Education Foundation and Creative Thinking Association of America. He serves on the faculty of the Institutes for Organizational Management for the U.S. Chamber of Commerce, and is a graduate of the Wharton School, University of Pennsylvania.

Institute on World Affairs Series - Religion and Conflict - The Myth of Religious Violence - William T. Cavanaugh

Cavanaugh is the author of Torture and Eucharist: Theology, Politics, and the Body of Christ., and co-edited The Blackwell Companion to Political Theology. He is assistant professor of Theology at the University of St. Thomas, and received his doctorate in Religion from Duke University, his Masters in Theology and Religious Studies From Cambridge University in England, and his undergraduate degree in theology from University of Notre Dame.

Contemporary Chinese Literature and Culture: Readings and Discussion
7:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Rui Li has published four novels, three essay collections, and four story collections. Many of these works have been translated into Swedish, English, French, Japanese, German, Dutch, and other languages. He is best known for a series of stories published under the title Houtu (Thick Earth), which won the China Times Literary Prize. His most recent novel is Yingcheng gushi (Tale of Silver City) and an eight-volume Dongyue Wenku: Li Rui Collection. Jiang Yun's first published story, "Wo de liangge nuer" (My Two Daughters), marked the beginning of the Wound Literature movement in Shanxi, China. Since then, Ms. Jiang has published four story collections, and her five novels include Shanshuo zai nide zhitou (Shining on the Top of Your Tree) and Wo de leilu (My Interior Land). Chuan Xi has published four collections of poems, most recently Water Stains, in addition to a play and translations. His poetry has been widely anthologized and translated into more than ten languages. Among his many prizes is the prestigious Lu Xun Prize for literature in 2001. Jinghui Meng is one of the foremost avant-garde playwrights in China whose productions have included The Rhinoceros in Love, Scandals from One Street, and Beckett's Waiting for Godot, adapted for Chinese. His latest film is Chicken Poets. They are all visiting writers from the International Writers' Workshop at the University of Iowa.

Annual Manatt/Phelps Lecture - Global Development, Trade Liberalization, and the American Response - Charles T. Manatt
4:00 PM – Benton Auditorium, Scheman Building, ISU Center - Ambassador Charles T. Manatt served as the U.S. Ambassador to the Dominican Republic from 1999 to 2001. He has been long active in the democracy movement, and was Founding Chairman of the National Democratic Institute. He also served as Vice Chairman of the National Endowment for Democracy, Chairman of the International Foundation for Election Systems, and as a board member of the Center for International Private Enterprise and the Center for Democracy. Mr. Manatt received a B.S. from Iowa State in 1958 and a J.D. from the George Washington University School of Law in 1962.

8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Betty Fussell has lectured widely on food history and is the author of nine books including Eating In, My Kitchen Wars, Food in Good Season, Masters of American Cookery, Home Bistro, Hear America Cooking and the epic history of the New World's native grain,The Story of Corn.A long-time journalist of food and travel, her articles have appeared in publications likeThe New York Times, The Los Angeles Times, Holiday, Travel and Leisure, Cosmopolitan, Food Arts, Wine and Food, Bon Appetit, Cooking Light, Ladies Home Journal, Lear's, Country Journal, and Vogue. She has a doctorate in English Literature.
