P.H. Elwood Lecture in Landscape Architecture With the Leopold Center for Sustainable Agriculture - Patriotism, Politics and the Environment in an Age
7:00 PM – Kocimski Auditorium, Design College - David Orr is the Paul Sears Distinguished Professor of Environmental Studies and Politics at Oberlin College and the author of The Last Refuge; Patriotism, Politics and the Environment in an Age of Terror. In this book he advocates a coherent environmental agenda, vigorous public discussion of the issues, improved political leadership, and an increased emphasis on environmental study in higher education. His other publications include The Nature of Design: Ecology, Culture, and Human Intention; Earth in Mind: Essays on Education, Environment, and the Human Prospect; Ecological Literacy and the Transition to a Postmodern World; The Campus and Environmental Responsibility, edited with David Eagan; The Global Predicament: Ecological Perspectives on World Order co-editor and contributor with Marvin Soroos. A Des Moines native, Dr. Orr received his doctorate in international relations from University of Pennsylvania. Reception in Gallery 101 to follow.

Remembering 9/11: - A First-Hand Experience from the Pentagon - Lt. Col. Matthew Swanson
8:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Lt. Col. Matthew Swanson was a member of the Air Force Crisis Action Team, a group assigned to respond in the event of a disaster, during the 911 terrorist attacks on the Pentagon. He was in the basement of the Pentagon when the attacks occurred and immediately carried out the rescue plan he helped create. He has been recognized for his leadership during those difficult circumstances and has first hand experience on how ordinary people became real life heroes. He is Chief of Fiscal Control and the Integration Branch of the Air Combat Command for the United State Air Force, and a graduate of Iowa State University.

Comedy! Comedy! Comedy! - Michael Ian Black
8:00 PM – Stephens Auditorium - Admission Free - Doors open at 7 pm - No tickets needed - Michael Ian Black is best known as Stuckeybowl's quirky manager Phil in NBC's "Ed," and as a commentator on VH-1 "I love the 70's and 80's" series. He co-created and starred in MTV's sketch comedy show "The State," appeared in the film "Wet Hot American Summer," and also guest-starred on "Spin City" and "NYPD Blue."

Negotiating Peace in Sudan - John Garang de Mabior
3:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - John Garang de Mabior is chairman of the Sudan People's Liberation Movement(SPLM) and Sudan People's Liberation Army (SPLA), He will provide a detailed analysis of the peace protocols that have been negotiated between the SPLM and the government of Sudan over the past 2 years. He will also provide his insights into the current situation in Darfur and its implications for the overall peace process. Dr. Garang received his doctorate in economics from Iowa State University in 1981.

Center for Excellence in the Arts and Humanities - Writing, Exile and Cunning - André Aciman
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - André Aciman was born in Alexandria, Egypt, and had short stays in Italy and France before immigrating to the United States. He is best know for his memoir Out of Egypt, an account of his Jewish-Turkish-Italian family's life in Alexandria, called a "a classic memoir of modern Jewish life" by The New York Times. He is also the author of False Papers-fourteen essays that explore themes of identity, home, and exile-and has edited a collection of essays, Letters of Transit. Aciman currently teaches in the French Department at the City University of New York Graduate College. He will discuss the creative process of translating his immigrant experiences and feelings of cultural loss into the written word. Following the talk, he will be joined on stage by John Monroe, a faculty member in the History Department, for a public interview.

Global Garden Lecture Series - The Otherworld Garden - Mira Engler
7:00 PM – Hughes Auditorium, Reiman Gardens - Mira Engler is associate professor of landscape architecture at Iowa State University. She will describes the process of designing The Otherworld Garden, an experimental garden she created for the 2004 Westonbirt International Garden Festival in Gloucestershire, West England.

Israel's Quest for Peace; Past, Present and Future - Still Life with Bombers: Israel in the Age of Terrorism
8:00 PM – Ames City Auditorium - David Horovitz is the editor of the Jerusalem Report, frequent commentator on CNN, BBC and NPR, and writes from Israel for newspapers around the world. His latest book is Still Life With Bombers: Israel in the Age of Terrorism. He is also the coauthor of Shalom, Friend, the 1996 biography of the late Yitzhak Rabin, and author of A Little Too Close to God: The Thrills and Panic of a Life in Israel. Adrian Bennett, ISU Professor Emeritus, will moderate.
