7:00 PM – Pioneer Room, Memorial Union - A panel discussion featuring Mary Sawyer, Iowa State University professor of religious studies and cofounder of the African American Studies program; Mary Ann Spicer, president of the Des Moines-based, nonpartisan political action group Sisters on Target; and State Representative Wayne Ford, cofounder of the Brown and Black Presidential Forum. Dianne Bystrom, director of the Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics will moderate. Part of the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Celebration.
Back in the BSSR: Power, Protest and Meaning through Belarusian Rock and Popular Culture - Maria Paula Survilla
2:00 PM – Gold Room, Memorial Union - Maria Paula Survilla is an associate professor of music at Wartburg College and president of the North American Association for the Advancement of Belarusan Studies. Her research interests include the role of contemporary music in the construction of personal and national identities in post-Soviet Belarus. She began fieldwork in Eastern Europe in 1989 and was funded as a Fulbright-Hayes scholar in 1993. She is the author of Of Mermaids and Rock Singers: Placing the Self and Constructing the Nation through Belarusan Contemporary Music (2002).

Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Holiday Celebration
4:00 PM – Great Hall, Memorial Union - Musical groups and speakers celebrate the life and legacy of Dr. King. Sucré Musique, a trio of music students on piano, flute, and oboe, and the Gospel Soul Innovators will perform. Speakers include Government of the Student Body President Emily Jensen and Black Student Alliance President Dimar Brown. President Geoffroy will present the Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr., Advancing One Community Awards. Birthday cake graciously donated by Campus Dining Services.

The heavens declare the glory of God: Weather in the Bible - William Gallus
2:00 PM – Brunnier Art Museum, Scheman Building, Iowa State Center - William Gallus, professor of geological and atmospheric science at Iowa State, will share just a little of his vast knowledge about biblical weather. Learn about the surprisingly frequent references to weather and weather phenomena in the Bible and decipher their meaning.

Outside the Box: Women, Politics and Media - Lynn Sherr
7:30 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Lynn Sherr, the Fall 2006 Carrie Chapman Catt Center for Women and Politics Mary Louise Smith Scholar, is an award-winning investigative reporter for ABC News 20/20. She was previously a national correspondent for ABCNEWS, where she covered a wide range of stories, everything from the Democratic and Republican conventions to NASA Space Shuttle missions. She just published Outside the Box: A Memoir, and is also the author of Failure Is Impossible: Susan B. Anthony in Her Own Words and Tall Blondes, and co-author of Susan B. Anthony Slept Here: A Guide to American Women's Landmarks. Sherr graduated from Wellesley College, where she now serves as a trustee.

Water and the Landscape: Ecological Design Approaches and Innovative Solutions for Management of Stormwater Runoff - Penny Livingston-Stark
6:00 PM – Kocimski Auditorium, College of Design - Penny Livingston-Stark is internationally recognized as a prominent permaculture teacher, designer, and speaker. She has been working professionally in the land management and development field for twenty-five years and has extensive experience in all phases of ecologically sound landscape design and construction as well as the use of natural non-toxic building materials. She specializes in site planning & design of resource-rich landscapes, integrating rainwater collection, edible landscaping, pond and water systems, habitat development and watershed restoration for homes, co-housing communities, businesses and diverse-yield perennial farms. A presentation of student awards and scholarships will begin at 6:00 pm, with the lecture commencing at 6:30 pm, and a reception following in the Design Building atrium. The Melting Ice Cellar - Patricia A. L. Cochran
8:00 PM – Sun Room, Memorial Union - Patricia Cochran, an Inupiat Eskimo born and raised in Nome, serves as executive director of the Alaska Native Science Commission (ANSC), a public, not-for-profit corporation. The ANSC provides a linkage for creating partnerships and communication between science and research and Alaska Native communities. The 35th Annual Richard Thompson Memorial Lecture.
