Knowing How to Break the Rules: Set Design on Broadway

Rachel Hauck is the 2019 Tony award-winning set designer for the Broadway musical Hadestown, which was awarded the 2019 Tony for Best Musical, and for the 2019 Tony-nominated play What the Constitution Means to Me. She will discuss her journey as a woman in the arts and ways to create more opportunities for women and people of color on Broadway. A native of California, Hauck now lives in New York City and designs sets for new plays and musicals on Broadway, Off Broadway, and for regional theater. She currently teaches at Princeton University.Part of the Theatre Program's "HERoic: Gender Equity in the Arts" series, celebrating the centennial of women’s suffrage and a new commitment to the 50/50 by 2020 initiative promoting gender equity in the theatre.

Stay for the entire event, including the brief question-and-answer session that follows the formal presentation. Most events run 75 minutes.
Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.
Lecture Etiquette
- Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
- Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
- Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
- Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
