A Hollywood Career in Costume Design

Ruth E. Carter is an Oscar-nominated costume designer who conceptualized and created more than 1,000 costumes for the world of Wakanda in Marvel's Black Panther. Carter has worked in the industry for more than three decades and is credited with over forty films. She earned Academy Award nominations for Best Costume Design for Spike Lee's Malcolm X and Steven Spielberg’s Amistad as well as a 2016 Emmy Nomination for Roots. Carter has worked with Spike Lee on 14 films, beginning with School Daze and including Do the Right Thing, and is well known for her work on period ensemble films like Lee Daniels' The Butler and Ava Duvernay's Selma.Human Sciences Week 2018 and part of the 2018-19 Helen LeBaron Hilton Endowed Chair Lecture Series, hosted by the Department of Apparel, Events and Hospitality Management

Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.
Lecture Etiquette
- Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
- Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
- Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
- Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
