Howard Sachar is Professor of History and International Affairs at George Washington University, and a consultant and lecturer on Middle Eastern affairs for the United States Foreign Service Institute. He is the author of 15 books including : The Course of Modern Jewish History, From the Ends of the Earth, The Emergence of the Middle East, Europe Leaves the Middle East, A History of Israel, The Man on the Camel, Egypt and Israel, A History of Israel since the Yom Kippur War, A History of the Jews in America, and Europe and Dreamland: Europeans and Jews in the Aftermath of the Great War. He is also the editor-in-chief of the 39-volume The Rise of Israel: A Documentary History. Steffen Schmidt, professor of Political Science, will moderate. This speaker is the first in a series planned by the Ames Coalition for Peace.Part of the World Affairs Series: Outside Looking in: International Perspective on U.S. Foreign Policy.

Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.
Lecture Etiquette
- Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
- Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
- Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
- Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
