Climate Preparedness and Resilient Cities: What It Means in Iowa

Des Moines Mayor Frank Cownie was one of eight U.S. mayors recently appointed to the State, Local and Tribal Leaders Task Force on Climate Preparedness and Resilience. The group has been charged with making recommendations to the White House for developing and financing tools to improve preparedness at the local level for increasingly frequent extreme weather conditions. Mayor Cownie has been an advocate for environmental sustainability within the U.S. Conference of Mayors and the Local Governments for Sustainability (ICLEI), and he was invited to participate as a local government delegate at the International Climate Meeting in Copenhagen, Denmark. Part of the 2014 Symposium on SustainabilityPrior to serving as mayor, Frank Cownie served for two years as an at-large member of the Des Moines City Council. He also served several terms on the Planning and Zoning Commission and was chairman of Downtown Des Moines, Inc.

Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.
Lecture Etiquette
- Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
- Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
- Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
- Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
