Barry commoner, in his work as a biologist, has focused primarily on ozone layer depletion. He just stepped down as director of the Center for the Biology of Natural Systems at Queens College in New York City after twenty years. He most recently was the lead researcher for a team from the North American commission for Environmental Cooperation which issued a controversial report naming the Ames power plant as one of the top 10 dioxin emitters detected in Northern Canada The commission was established under the North American Free Agreement to address regional environmental issues. his publications include: Science and Survival, The Closing Circle, Energy and Human Welfare, the Poverty of Power, The Politics of Energy, and Making Peace with the Planet. he received a doctorate in biology from Harvard University.Part of the World Affairs Series: Globalization - Trade, Debt and Civil Disorder.
Stay for the entire event, including the brief question-and-answer session that follows the formal presentation. Most events run 75 minutes.
Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.
Lecture Etiquette
- Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
- Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
- Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
- Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
