Mr. Harrington, Professor of Political Science at Queens College and one of America's foremost socialists, chaired the Socialist Party of the US from 1968 to 1972 and now chairs the Democratic Socialists of America. He has written numerous books, including The Vast Majority: A Journey to the World's Poor, The Other America, Decade of Decision: The Crisis of the American System and to be published this spring, The Politics of God's Funeral - The Spiritual Crisis of Western Society. Long active in liberal and trade union causes, he served as a member of Dr. Martin Luther King, Jr's advisory committee in the 1960's and as an initiator of the Democratic Socialist Organizing Committee in 1973. Mr. Harrington was educated at Holy Cross, Yale, and the University of Chicago.Part of the National Affairs Series: Poverty - The Great American Nightmare.

Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.
Lecture Etiquette
- Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
- Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
- Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
- Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
