Larry Shinn has been the president of Berea College in Kentucky for the last fourteen years. Under his leadership, Berea has developed a sustainability initiative that has included creating a Sustainability and Environmental Studies Program, completing ecological renovations of many campus buildings, and establishing a residential "ecovillage" for student families. Dr. Shinn will also provide the keynote address for Iowa State's Live Green Symposium beginning at 7:45 a.m. on Feb. 10, 2009, on "Turning Green: Berea College in the 21st Century." Symposium on Enhancing Sustainability at Iowa State University, Monday evening, Feb. 9 and Tuesday, Feb. 10 in the Memorial Union. The goal of the symposium is to identify sustainability initiatives the university can and should pursue to become a model sustainable campus, as well as strategies to engage our university community in those initiatives

Larry Shinn, president of Berea College, Kentucky, is a leader in campus sustainability initiatives, and he will kick off the symposium Monday evening, speaking at 8 p.m. in the Durham Great Hall. Prior to his speech, you will want to attend the reception and poster session from 7 p.m. - 7:55 p.m. also in the Great Hall.

On Tuesday morning, the symposium will continue, starting at 7:45 a.m. in the Sun Room with a welcome from President Geoffroy, then a keynote address by President Shinn. During the rest of the day, there will be discussions by faculty and student panels, large group sessions on campus recycling and Iowa Sate’s carbon footprint, and breakout sessions.

Stay for the entire event, including the brief question-and-answer session that follows the formal presentation. Most events run 75 minutes.

Sign-ins are after the event concludes. For lectures in the Memorial Union, go to the information desk in the Main Lounge. In other academic buildings, look for signage outside the auditorium.

Lecture Etiquette

  • Stay for the entire lecture and the brief audience Q&A. If a student needs to leave early, he or she should sit near the back and exit discreetly.
  • Do not bring food or uncovered drinks into the lecture.
  • Check with Lectures staff before taking photographs or recording any portion of the event. There are often restrictions. Cell phones, tablets and laptops may be used to take notes or for class assignments.
  • Keep questions or comments brief and concise to allow as many as possible.
